David 4-Piece Plaster Study Cast Set

A handmade four-piece plaster study set featuring the eye, nose, mouth, and ear of Michelangelo's David. Designed for portrait drawing, facial anatomy, value, and form studies, the set allows artists to work with individual features before taking on the complexity of a complete head.

Each cast is approximately half scale and compact enough for a desk, easel area, or classroom study station. Rear hanging loops also allow the pieces to be mounted for drawing or lighting exercises.

What's Included

  • Eye of David study cast
  • Nose of David study cast
  • Mouth of David study cast
  • Ear of David study cast

Why Study the Features Separately?

Breaking the face into individual features gives you time to study structure without having to solve an entire portrait at once.

The eye introduces the socket, brow, and eyelid relationships. The nose provides clear planes and strong light-and-shadow changes. The mouth helps develop an understanding of the lips, muzzle, and surrounding facial forms. The ear adds overlapping ridges, recesses, and more complex internal structure.

Together, the four casts create a focused progression for building stronger portrait-drawing skills.

What You Can Practice

  • Facial anatomy and structure
  • Proportion and measurement
  • Major and minor plane changes
  • Light and shadow relationships
  • Value control and rendering
  • Cast shadows and reflected light
  • Observational drawing
  • Traditional cast drawing methods

Suggested Study Progression

Work with one feature at a time and begin by simplifying it into its largest forms. Establish proportion and major light-and-shadow relationships before moving into smaller details.

Once you are comfortable with a feature, change the viewing angle or lighting direction and draw it again. Repeating the same subject under different conditions helps build an understanding of the underlying three-dimensional structure rather than memorizing one particular view.

The casts can also be flipped or viewed from less familiar angles for simplified shape, plane, and value exercises.

Why Plaster?

Plaster has long been used for artistic training because its matte white surface minimizes the distraction of local color. Under controlled lighting, subtle plane changes, reflected light, form shadow, and cast shadow become easier to observe.

Handmade in the Studio

Each piece in the David 4-Piece Study Set is individually cast and finished by hand.

Small air bubbles may occasionally be present on the rear or base of the cast as part of the casting process, but the primary study surface is kept clean for drawing and observation.

Optional Study Stand

These casts are compatible with the From the Mold desktop study stand, allowing them to be positioned upright on a desk or drawing table without permanent wall mounting.

The stand's black background provides strong contrast against the white plaster, while rubber feet on the base help reduce sliding during use. Study stand sold separately.

For Educators

The David 4-Piece Study Set works well for portrait drawing, facial anatomy, value, and observational drawing exercises.

The individual casts can be distributed among students, rotated between study stations, or used by an instructor to isolate specific facial structures during demonstrations.
